Advent Wine Blind Tasting … Is It Ten Now?
Yeah, I’ve lost track entirely of how many of these I’ve done.
Based on the color alone I’m guessing young. Turkish. I think this a Turkish grape. I’m going with young, moderate alcohol, unoaked, Öküzgözü. Or maybe Kösetevek? Gah! How do people do this?
And once again I am horribly humiliated by almost everything.
Chateau Tamagne Saperavi, 2018
So yeah. A Russian Saperavi. We have that in Turkey. Because…well your guess is as good as mine.
Appearance: intensely purple
Alcohol: 12.5%
Nose: Big and rich purple/black fruit like black mulberry and plums stewed with vanilla, hints of black pepper, and moss. A suggestion of lingering eucalyptus.
Palate: Medium-bodied with medium and persistent tannins, serious mouthwatering acidity, and the sensation of spice. Mulberry and blackberry along with damson plum. The vanilla on the nose is not quite so expressive on the palate but there’s a great deal of green reminiscent of chewing young twigs. Which sounds ridiculous but if you grew up in the country like I did and pretended to be adventurers/explorers you probably ate a bunch of weird things too. Black pepper and clove spice rise like a cloud in the mouth and linger on the finish along with that (not unpleasant) green stick.
