  It has been so long since I've been to Moldova that I don't even remember what year it was. 2009? Maybe 2010? For a brief couple years I was in Moldova, mostly Chisinau, not infrequently visiting for work. Any free time I had was spent with my local colleagues touring churches and the like. While this was long before I became involved in wine, I was even then conscious of the wine industry there.  Unfortunately, the relatively quick in and out trips and only a passing interest in wine meant that I missed huge opportunities to experience more and learn more about Moldovan wine.   Turkish winery Sevilen has winemaking facilities in both Mürefte and Aydın. They also have vineyards in several locations including Mürefte, Denizli, and across Anatolia. The grapes for this Colombard Semillon wine, a new release last year from Sevilen, come from the winery's Mürefte vineyards. Interestingly, while the wine is new, the vines are not.  It turns out that Sevilen has had its Colombard vineyards for something like 30 years. However, until now they used the grapes for brandy and table wine production only. Then last year, Sevilen's team took a trip to France. People often forget to include Turkey, which in fact is the home of the vitis vinifera grape, when talking about ancient and old world wine cultures.   Kırklareli-based winery Arcadia is not alone in cultivating Sauvignon Blanc. This French varietal maintains a spot as a major favorite here in Turkey. What sets it apart is the Arcadia 333. The sexiest wine in Turkey (but more on why later!). While many turn up their nose to sweet wines, I staunchly remain a fan. Turkey offers a fair number of semi and sweet wines. Most of them are made with late harvest grapes while three producers, Corvus, LA Wines, and Gemici make passito-style sweet wines. Only one, Arcadia, makes a sweet wine with botrytis grapes.   Umurbey arguably makes one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in Turkey. While the winery's proprietor, Umur bey (Mr. Umur) does not want to be known as a white wine maker; the winery's Sauvignon Blanc is its most recognized wine. It is not, however, the only white wine. Many site Semillon as (one of) the first foreign grape planted in Turkey. Plantings, which remain concentrated on Turkey's European side from Kırklareli down through the Gallipoli peninsula, go back as far as the early twentieth century.
