  I frequently lament the vast amount of Bordeaux-style blends we have in Turkey. Partially because it does get rather tedious to drink the same blends over and over. Mostly though because Turkey has a plethora (1240+ at last count) of its own grapes! Of which we see maybe 40 in wine. But since I do so often complain about the sea of wanna be Bordeaux here, I thought maybe I should talk about a few of them for once. But first

  Petit Verdot blends well with a number of Turkish grapes. In addition to this Öküzgözü blend by Gülor, it also does well with Karasakız. Its meaty tannins and floral perfume help fill out some of these more highly acidic grapes that, left on their own, make medium bodied and often juicy fruity wines. For Gülor, the Öküzgözü Petit Verdot falls under the winery’s Silver Series which includes several native-international variety blends.   I have chosen to tackle the Trakya Bağ Rotası (Thrace Wine Route) last because I find it the most frustrating. Membership includes wineries Like Arda in upper Thrace in Edirne (near the Bulgarian/Greek borders) all the way to Suvla at the tippy tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula. Technically, all these wineries are indeed in Thrace. Geographically anyway. And yet. Edirne and neighboring districts Kırklareli and Tekirdağ are significantly more northerly, colder, and snowier.   Gülor Winery, founded in 1993 by Güler Sabancı, has the distinction of being one of Turkey’s first boutique wineries. It has grown a lot since the vineyards were planted in 1996. The winery now produces some 200,000 liters annually. While perhaps no longer boutique in size, Gülor remains boutique at heart. The winery has worked with several expert French winemakers since its inception. Since 2012 it has been in the hands of Antoine Bastide d’Izard. He has said of Gülor:  “Gülor is one of the rare boutique wineries in Turkey offering original and high-quality blends of both international and local grapes,” Gülor’s winery sits on an estate of 100 hectares located in the Thracian subregion Tekirdağ on

  In 1993 Güler Sabancı of the Sabancı Group, established Gülor Winery in the fertile soils of Tekirdağ, part of Turkey’s Thracian region. Upon founding the winery, Sabancı sought the assistance of Professor Nicolas Vivas from the University of Bordeaux. Vivas directed all phases of production and winemaking until 2012, when seventh-generation winemaker Antoine Bastide d’Izar took over the reins. Winemakers here often compare the terroir in this area of Thrace to that of Bordeaux. It is perhaps then not surprising that many of the vineyards here are planted with French varietals.  Combine that with their French winemakers, it is no great shock that Gülor also cultivates French varietals.   I’m always surprised when I go to Macro Center by how many wines the store doesn’t have. It has a very small alcohol selection, in fact I think my local Carrefour has as many or more varieties. However what Macro Center’s selection does have going for it is the odd bottle here or there that I’ve not seen anywhere else; which is how I ended up with this bottle of 2013 Gülor Öküzgözü Malbec for 71.50TL.
