Advent Wine Sobran Bağları Nebbiolo
No blind tasting for today, huzzah! That gives my brain a little bit of a break.
If you read the title and thought to yourself: Sobran? Where in Piemonte is that? Well the answer is that it’s not. In Piemonte. Nor is it in Valle d’Aosta nor in Lombardia or anywhere else in Italy. Sobran Bağları is a Turkish winery based in Alaşehir in the Aegean. This 2018 vintage was not only the winery’s first release of Nebbiolo, but the first in Turkey.
Sobran Bağları Nebbiolo, 2018
A family-run winery, Sobran Bağları started planting in 2007 eventually expanding from a small vineyard to 31 hectares that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Öküzgözü, Boğazkere, Garnacha, and Nebbiolo. In 2017, they released their first commercial vintage.
Appearance: medium opaque cherry-juice color with a watery rim
Alcohol: 14.5% abv
Nose: Cherry, raspberry, and roses with spicy clove. Maybe it’s the theme and the time of the year but it smells like Christmas. Not in a Christmas pudding way more like spices and pine boughs.
Palate: Medium-bodied but bright, mouthwatering acidity and medium tannins leading to a medium(-) finish. Palate flavors reflect the nose pretty faithfully with lots of cherry and roses. This lacks the depth and structure of Italian Nebbiolo but there’s a refreshing crispness. I think in a few more vintages we might see an elegant Nebbiolo from this winery.
