Advent Wine Vino Dessera Cabernet Franc

Completely by coincidence did I include this bottle in my Advent boxes ‘o wine. December has seen both #CabFrancDay (December 4) and a #WinePW Cabernet Franc around the world. Naturally I blogged about Turkish wine for both events.

I’ve never had Cabernet Franc from France, or anywhere else in Europe. But what I’ve come to realize from these events is that Turkish Cabernet Franc leans more New World in style. The wines here don’t have the high acidity and austere elegance of their European counterparts. Rather they display the riper fruit and structure of New World wines.

Vino Dessera Cabernet Franc, 2018

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a single varietal Cabernet Franc vintage from Kırklareli-based Vino Dessera. I had a 2013 years ago but have not been able to find another since. Like many other wineries in Turkey now debuting single varietal Cab Franc, Vino Dessera has used it primarily in blends until now. The wine, made with grapes sourced from their home Kırklareli vineyards, aged for eight months in oak before bottling.

Appearance: intense purple-ruby

Alcohol: 14.26% abv (how very precise!)

Nose: Rich black mulberry, blackberry, vanilla, hints of violet and chili pepper, developing balsamic notes.

Palate: Medium-bodied with medium plus acidity and low tannins. Very silky in the mouth. A quick flash of pyrazine/green bell pepper is quickly overshadowed by blackberry and black mulberry jam. Opens to include balsamic and barbeque smoke.
