  The Nif Bağları Aegean beyaz is not a new wine from Nif. They've been producing the Aegean series for several years now with white, rosé, and red blends. Always palatable in the past but nothing to get overly excited about. Then last year, Nif changed its blend. Whereas in the past the wine blended Viognier and Narince, for 2020, the winery added Solaris. My humble opinion, a much nicer blend! Nif has not abandoned the idea of a Viognier - Narince blend though. Rather, they've elevated it to the eponymous Nif Serisi level. But there will be more about that another time!   To begin, Solaris is not a wine name, it's the grape. Developed in Germany in 1975, Solaris is a hybrid grape. Now, get ready for the geeky bits. Its parents are Merzling (itself a hybrid) and the sexy sexy grape, Gm 6493. Yup, you read that correctly. Gm 6493. With so many grapes existing naturally, why make another? In this case, Solaris, which super ripens early, was intended for those cold European regions where the sun doesn't shine so much.   About an hour's drive outside Izmir, arriving at Nif Bağları gives you the feeling of having found a desert oasis. Located off an unmarked, dirt road turnoff from the main highway, visitors navigate the narrow, dirt road, sometimes pulling off to the shoulder to allow large trucks and tractors to pass. Just when you think you've made the wrong turn, the winery appears. From the front parking area it looks not especially remarkable. But follow the signs around the back to entrance to find one of Turkey's sleekest wineries. A giant wall of gleaming glass separates the vineyards from the production area letting you see everything at once.

  In Part One of my Turkish Wine Routes series I covered the Urla Bağ Yolu. Now for Part Two, we're moving east from the Aegean coastal district of Urla to Turkey's more inland Aegean areas with the İç Ege Bağ Rotası. İç Ege Bağ Rotası The İç Ege Bağ Rotası (literally: inner Aegean vineyard route) is a fairly recent invention. At least it is the newest of Turkey's four wine routes. The route covers a large area; some 11,700 square kilometers. So says Google. It is 200 kilometers from the winery closest to the Aegean (Nif Bağları) to the farthest inland (Küp Şarapçılık) and another 200+ kilometers from Kastro Tireli

  It was while studying agriculture in Germany that Gaye Özcan, proprietor and winemaker at Nif Bağları, learned about the grape Solaris. Developed in 1975 in Germany, Solaris is a hybrid grape resulting from a crossing of Merzling and GM 6493 (which itself is a crossing of Zarya Severa and Muscat Ottonel). Early ripening and disease resistant, Solaris can reach high sugar levels even in cool climates with little sunshine making it increasingly popular in Europe's more northern countries. Having gained an appreciation for the grape and its viticultural properties, Özcan ensured the planting of some vines in her Aegean vineyards. Currently she uses the grape only as a blending partner

  Nif Vineyards outside Izmir is owned an operated by the Özcan family. The powerhouse behind the winery is Gaye Özcan who spearheaded the winery's start up while still in her early 20's. When Gaye started planning the winery, the good old boys' club of the Turkish wine industry told her she had to plant Cabernet and Merlot. Without a Bordeaux-blend she could not achieve success. Her response: she planted Sangiovese. Gaye's approach to Bornova Misketi has been similar. Bornova Misketi belongs to the Muscat family.
