  Several years ago, when I interviewed people from Asmadan winery for the book, they mentioned they were growing Macabeo. But then there was nothing, and still nothing so I thought maybe I heard wrong. Last fall I learned that I had not heard wrong! Asmadan brought a new wine to one of GustoBar's big tasting events, Vals Macabeo Narince. We know that my whole raison d'être is native grapes.   Have you ever heard of Kabar? If you know wine from Tokaj or from Hungary at all, you've probably had some Furmint and Hárslevelű. You've probably also had Kabar though without even knowing it. We don't see a lot of varietal Kabar, but Bükk-based winery Gallay Kézmüves Pince is changing that.  Gallay Kézműves Pince is the first family-owned and operated small production winery in the heart of Bükk region in Nyékládháza (located pretty much halfway between Eger and Tokaj).   When possible, I like to visit a Christmas market somewhere in Europe during Advent. We don't get a lot of Christmas in Turkey as one might suspect. This year was Colmar and past trips have included Graz (specifically for the Krapus Lauf), Prague, London, and Ljubljana. And that is where I got this particular bottle of Batič Angel Belo. As far as Christmas markets went, Ljubljana's disappointed. But the city, food, and wine did not! Located in Vipava, Primorje not so very far from the Italian border, the first Batič wines were born in the 16th century. Here, the monks of the Batič estate in Šempas made communion wine.

It's appearance at the event was remarkable for several reasons but the most eye-catching was the wine's color. It appeared a very pale pink!
