While most of my focus is in Turkish wines, it's nice to sometimes walk in the vineyards of our neighbors. Metaphorically speaking of course. I've yet to visit Romania at all let alone its vineyards. But that's one of the great things about wine. Opening a bottle is like opening a magic door through which you can step and discover new worlds. Maybe you've never been to that region, or even that country, but wine lets you taste what you cannot see.  For me, one of those recent journeys too me to Romania and to the discovery of one of the country's native grapes, Fetească Neagră.   I've mentioned my friend S. a few times here and there in my blog. A teacher here in Istanbul, she drives home to Austria every summer and returns with a car full of goodies. Tis not a short drive from Istanbul to Austria, nor do we share a border. Advent Day 2 Crama Ferdi Cuvee Francisc, 2021 As the name indicates, this Crama Ferdi wine is a cuvee, not a 100% Cabernet Franc. In this case, the blend includes Cabernet Franc and Merlot aged for 14 months in oak.  Initially, the wine showed vanilla and stewed fruit aromas then slowly unfolded to reveal spice and cola notes. Very smooth on the palace with almost no discernable tannin

A friend of mine drives back and forth from Istanbul to Austria and back every summer. Last year she drove through Romania on the way back home and stopped a winery where she picked up a couple bottles of wine for me. Fantastic friend that! I know that Romania has a wealth of native grapes and I've had a few, but only in blends which made me even more excited to try these. 1000 de Chipuri Located just north of the Bulgaria-Romania border and a bit west of the Black Sea is 1000 de Chipuri. The name means 1000 faces and pays homage to the people who work in wine.
