Çakır Somnium Bornova Misketi

I haven’t written before about Çakır Bağcılık ve Şarapçılık. It’s a newish winery, releasing its first vintage only last year. Until recently this was the only of their wines I’ve had it being the only native grape they work with. And while I had it last summer (I am so behind on my writing up my notes!) with warmer weather coming back around I’ve been thinking about how darn good this was and how much I want it again. So let’s talk about some Çakır Bornova Misketi. But first, the winery.

Çakır Bağcılık ve Şarapçılık, is one of the newest members of the Urla Bağ Yolu (along with Perdix). The winery and its vineyards are appropriately in the southern İzmir district of Urla in the village Barbaros. In addition to Bornova Misketi, Çakır grows Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Their first year out of the gate, all the wines were bottled under the label Somnium but the winery has now released two more labels: Adventum and Yarımdalı.

I haven’t had a chance to visit yet but look forward to doing so as the winery and restaurant look beautifully done.

Now let’s talk about how much I loved this wine!

Pale lemon on the pour, this aromatic wine was like a tropical garden jumping out of the glass! Such a pretty nose full of white rose, tropical fruit, citrus blossom, and bergamot. Medium in body and acidity, flavors on the palate were delicate but not lacking intensity. Big, ripe, juicy melon and bergamot peel preserves scattered over with rose petals and a hint of crushed quartz on the finish.

For all its perfumed innocence this Bornova Misketi pulled no punched on alcohol with a 14% abv. A high alcohol level that went totally unnoticed. This wine was dangerous. One of the best Bornova Misketi wines that I’ve had in a while.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the 2020 Bornova Misketi, bottled under a new label name: Yarımdalı.
