Sevilen 900 Petit Verdot
Named for its elevation on the Güney Plateau, Sevilen’s 900 series includes three wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Fumé Blanc, and Petit Verdot.
At 900 meters elevation on the plateau, Sevilen’s vineyards experience a large diurnal swing allowing grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness while retaining good levels of acidity. For that reason, these vineyards make some of the winery’s top quality wines.
I love Petit Verdot. I’m pretty sure I’ve had every varietal (and most of the blends) Petit Verdot wines in Turkey. Generally I don’t like to say if I have favorites of anything but I can’t not admit that this has been my absolute favorite Petit Verdot.
Sevilen 900 Petit Verdot 2015 Tasting Notes
Aged 14 months French barrique followed by 12 months in bottle before release, the Sevilen 900 Petit Verdot is a big wine that could still age well for years. I have no patience though so I went ahead and drank it.
Intense, inky black purple color in the glass, the wine wanted some time to fully open up. When it did, heady aromatics of black currant, mocha, and tar, mingled with delicate florals, fresh herbs, and black currant leaf.
Drinking the wine was like getting socked in the mouth with powerful, firm tannins. A racy acidity helped to tame the tannins a bit but between the tannins and the 14.5% abv, there was no mistaking that this was a bold and big wine. Roasted meat flavors highlighted black fruits and violets, and lead to a long, bitter coffee finish.
