Advent Wine Challenge Day 8: Winzerhof Kridlo Gelber Muskateller
I’ve had this wine for about a year and finally pulled it out. A gift from Austria from a friend who knows of my love for all the Muscats of the world. With no indication on the label to give me any idea as to its sweetness level, I really had no idea what to expect.
But, sweet or dry, I thought something as aromatic as Gelber Muskateller (more well-known as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) would do well with Indian food. I made a feast using recipes from my friend Kay’s Punjab cookbook and crossed my fingers.

When I opened the screw cap (thank you, Austria) I initially felt concerned. The inside of the cap and the threads on the bottle were not in good condition. It looked like some of the wine had leaked through that little paper cap that’s inside the screw cap, causing rust. Happily, the wine itself was fine.
Brilliant and pale in the glass with just a hint of green highlighting. Very aromatic (not that I expected anything different) with white rose, citrus fruits, and apricot. The palate followed the nose with some nice acidity balancing any little residual sugar and 12.5% abv.
Not the most fabulous Muscat of my life but it did indeed pair very well with my Indian feast!
