Barel GUNN Cabernet
Barel Vineyards was founded in 1997 with the aim of adding a little bit more taste to the life by the Akın family. While Barel’s name comes from the names of two siblings Elif and Barkın Akın brothers; the winery is in the hands of youngest of the Akıns, Barkın.
The Akın family was making wine on their land for family and friends years before the winery was officially founded. Barkın, who always had a dream to open a restaurant in his home town, studied gastronomy before settling on his family’s land in Trakya. As a wine lover he believes that you should be able to put a bottle (or two!) of wine on the table every night without breaking the bank.
Even if you’re buying a wine from the GUNN series, Barel’s top label, you’re not going to break the bank.
Barel GUNN Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Tasting Notes
Barel’s GUNN Cabernet Sauvignon showed a deep ruby in the glass. Aromas of red and black fruits fought for supremacy with sweet spices and vanilla. The latter won initially but some breathing time allowed the two to develop a more harmonious relationship.
Tight, finely grained tannins held the wine’s flavors captive until some swirling pried them loose. Rich, ripe fruits, sweet spices, cinnamon, gun powder, and pencil lead unfolded in a rich, full-bodied wine. The wine attained a fairly good balance despite the 14.5% abv.
A nice wine for the price point.
