Akberg Büyük Bağ Shiraz

Akberg winery is off and running since its addition of “real” vs fruit wine (for more on that check out this post). While it puts a heavy emphasis on native grapes with wines from Narince, Bornova Misketi, Papazkarası, and lesser known varieties like Osmanca; the winery also makes a few international grape-based wines.

I first tried their Shiraz, which they source from vineyards in Denizli in the inner Aegean, at one of GustoBar’s tasting events. It wasn’t my favorite (spoiler) but I found it … interesting. Turkish wine

Akberg Büyük Bağ Shiraz, 2020

The Shiraz falls under Akberg’s Büyük Bağ label. These wines, the first line the winery debuted, feature fresh wines with little to no oak ageing, mean to be drunk young.

The wine poured a deep purpley ruby (which you’ll have to take my word for as apparently I forgot to take a picture. The nose simply screamed “purple” with an exuberant display of purple SweeTarts, grapes, and purple flowers and just a whiff of earthy black olive.

Pleasantly low alcohol with only 12.5% ABV, low-medium tannins with just enough grip to say hello before the melted into fresh acidity and the overwhelming flavor of purple SweeTarts.
