This year, I get the honor of kicking of the #WinePW 2022 calendar with a celebration of bubbles from around the world!

For this month’s theme, it does not matter if your bubbles are traditional method, tank method, or otherwise. If it fizzes it’s fair game! Stick to a classic like Champagne, Franciacorta, Prosecco, or Cava…or go off the beaten path with Brachetto, Sparkling Shiraz, or something from a new to you country.

I always try to find at least one bottle of bubbles in any country I visit. A semi-recent trip over the summer took my to Hungary where I found the Kolonics Pincészet Juhsecco.

#WineKolonics Pincészet Juhsecco, 2020

Located on the Somló hill, Kolonics Pincészet, is a small family estate that stretches back several generations. They grow traditional Somló varieties of Furmint, Olaszrizling, Juhfark, and Hárslevelű and ferment and age their wines in acacia barrels. I quite like their wines and have been lucky enough to have a few before.

The Juhsecco, a fun play on ‘Juhfark’ and ‘Prosecco’, I think actually has nothing to do with the tank (or shall we say Martinotti) method. From what I can find online, bubbles were artificially added to the wine after it fermented and aged in acacia barrels. But the artificial bubbles does not take away from how nice it is!

Medium gold in the glass with bubbles excited to be released from their confines! Slatey-mineral on the nose joined by (unsurprisingly I guess) acacia blossom and yellow fruits like pear and quince. For all the energy in the bubbles, they were very soft in the mouth. I felt some weight (possible residual sugar?) but lots of nice acidity and a refreshingly low ABV of only 10.5%. I cannot in words describe how utterly interesting this wine was. I barely had words to describe the flavors. I kept saying to myself “oooo what IS this?”. The best I can do you is exotic blossoms and fruit with quince jam, honey, ginger flower, and nutmeg.
