Boğazkere from Urla
The Boğazkere grape comes from Diyarbakır in Turkey’s farthest east vineyards. Commercial wineries do not exist in Diyarbakır. Wineries around the country either own or contract with growers there and have the grapes shipped in. However, like many other grapes, Boğazkere has migrated to different parts of the country.
One place the grape has found a new home is in the vineyards of Urla Şarapçılık. Located in the same-named sub region along the Aegean and south of Izmir;
So what does a Boğazkere from the Aegean region taste like? Let’s find out!
Urla Şarapçılık Boğazkere 2013 Tasting Notes
To start, Boğazkere can often be a tricky grape to make into a varietal wine. It’s generally harsh tannins make it a challenge to tame. Very few can manage it. Urla Şarapçılık did a bang up job.
While still developing, the medium intense, clear cherry garnet color hinted at the wine’s maturity. A flick of the wrist sent intense black and red fruit swimming from the glass with mulberry leading the charge. Green bell pepper, baking spices, black pepper, and freshly turned earth filled out the bouquet.
Deeply spiced on the palate, clove, cinnamon, and pepper highlighted the black cherry and mulberry fruit flavors and lingered on a long finish. Big and bold like a Boğazkere should be, the Urla Şarapçılık Boğazkere had slightly grippy, mouthfilling tannins balanced by a racy acidity.
Definitely a Boğazkere with its own personality!
