Chateau Nuzun 2013 Rose

When was the last time you were really wrong about something? While I’m sure there have been so many more times; one that really sticks in my head was when I was maybe about 11. My mom arranged a play date for me with a girl in my grade. Not that I was super popular (I was firmly in the ‘weird kid’ camp) but she was definitely lower on the middle school hierarchy than I was and I wouldn’t have been caught dead talking to her at school. Not only did I have a great time with her that day but she became a really good friend.

I don’t particularly like rosé. I don’t think I can even count how many times I’ve said that on this blog. Sometimes though, like with that girl in middle school, I’m willing to admit that I’m wrong about my anti-rosé prejudices. The Chateau Nuzun 2013 Rose is one of those cases.

Chateau Nuzun

Chateau Nuzun is an artisanal winery located in Tekirdağ in Turkey’s Thrace. It is run by the petite and charming Nazan Uzun who believes that good wines can only be made from excellent grapes. Hence, she concentrates on good viticulture practices. All the grapes at Chateau Nuzun are certified organic and there is intervention in the vineyards where she pretty much lets nature do its thing.

I’m pretty much a big fan of Chateau Nuzun wines so when I saw Nazan giving wine tastings at the Istanbul food festival 101 Lezzetli I Chateau Nuzun Rosewas happy to taste whatever she wanted to pour. Even including the 2013 rosé. I was so blown away by it that I went out and bought a bottle.

Chateau Nuzun 2013 Rose Tasting Notes:

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a rosé made out of such a big blend of grapes. The 2013 Chateau Nuzun Rose is a blend of Merlot (54%), Cabernet Sauvignon (22%), Syrah (14%), Öküzgözü (7%), and Zinfandel (3%). You can see in the above picture how dark it is. It looks almost more like a light red than a dark rosé. Maybe that’s why I liked it so much!

This is a very fruity wine with mashed strawberries in the forefront and aromas of candy floss, white pepper, and savory herbs. Lively acid keeps the palate fresh. The fruit is still there but the savory herb flavors, sage and thyme, really come out on the palate.

Never has crow tasted so good!
