Gordias Sauvignon Blanc

Gordias winery, located outside Turkey’s capital Ankara, is mostly known for its red wines. However, Canan, the one woman show runner there, does make white wine as well. Her Nana Narince ranks as one of my absolute favorite Narinces. Unfortunately, it, and her other whites, have proven very difficult to find. So, if you find one, buy three. In addition to the Nana Narince, Canan’s white wine collection also includes the Gordias Sauvignon Blanc.

This part of Central Anatolia, around Ankara, tends to lend itself more towards black grape cultivation. The main native grape from this area being Kalecik Karası (which Gordias also produces). However, just because red wine reigns does not mean there’s no white. Hasandede comes from the region and producers other than Gordias, like Vinkara, also produce Sauvignon Blanc.

Gordias Sauvignon Blanc 2017 Tasting Notes

Star bright pale, silvery lemon in the glass, the wine had some of that varietal cat pee on the nose…but it was so much more. Ripe melon, freshly squeezed lemon, and white flowers created a fresh, summery profile.

A bit rounder with a lower acidity level than your standard Sauvignon Blanc with a medium body, 13% abv, and the weighty feel of a hint of residual sugar. Similar to the nose, the palate was full of juicy summer melon accompanied by candied bergamont peel and bright lemony edges.

Interesting. I was immensely put off by their Kalecik Karası – it was a lesson in strangling a variety to its silent death. A geyser of melancholia. Such a waste of potential for an otherwise fertile grape considered on par with the ever-capricious Pinot Noir.

May try this one, though my favourite Turkish SB is Likya – incredibly crisp, limey, refreshing, perfect escort to fatty fishes and oily “meze”.

Maybe because Attaleia people know better how to write paeans to the Gods of citrus and lime 😊

I’m so sad you did not enjoy the Gordias Kalecik Karası! I find all of Canan’s reds have a very distinctive and somewhat challenging personality though so perhaps its just a matter of taste. 🙂 Her Boğazkere and Cabernet Franc particularly I love. There are many lovely SBs here though!
