Gürbüz Cabernet Shiraz, Deja Vous?
If a Cabernet Shiraz blend from Akın Gürbüz has a hint of deja vous about it for you, you wouldn’t be wrong. The Gürbüz Blend #1 also contains both Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. If I recall correctly the story (which I hope I do!). Blend #1 was, as the name might indicate, the first blend he made. Later, after completing and bottling the blend, Akın repeated the blend. However, it was a separate batch from the first blend. As such, he did not feel comfortable bottling it under the same name because, to him, it was not the same thing and he didn’t want to deceive anyone.
If only more people had that level of integrity.
This all happened during Akın’s first vintage and yet he continues to make both the Blend #1 and the Cabernet Shiraz each year. Do they taste different at all? You’d have to try them side by side to really find out. I haven’t done that (yet anyway!) myself so I’d be curious to hear if anyone tries it.
Gürbüz Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, 2016
The wine poured a deep, black red with rich aromas of bramble fruit mashed with vanilla, toffee, tobacco, leather, and pine. On the palate it’s full-bodied and well-built with persistent with very good acidity, firm well integrated, ripe tannins and high alcohol (14.9%). Mouth-filling flavors of red and black berry fruit, tack room, sandalwood, with a delicate touch of flowers and a long, warm finish.
If you love big red wines, you really need look no further than Gürbüz’s.
