VinBodrum 2014 Shiraz

As my wine tastings wind down, sometimes a few of my regulars stick around for a chat. More often than not when that happens, I’ll take a break from cleaning and open another bottle to share. One night, I reached for a bottle of Shiraz made by a new winery none of us knew much of anything about, Bodrum Winery.

I’ve written about Bodrum Winery a couple few times already, but never about my first experience with their wine. The very first of their wines I tried was the VinBodrum 2014 Shiraz and it was one of those wines I wish I’d saved for myself!

Bodrum Winery VinBodrum 2014 Shiraz Tasting Notes

For this vintage, Bodrum Winery sourced grapes from the Silva vineyards in Mumcular, Bodrum near the winery and from Kuşçular vineyards in Urla about 275 kilometers away.

Deeply garnet, this unfiltered wine threw off aromas of barnyard and meat with underlying red fruits and whiffs of toffee. Drinking this Shiraz felt like a simile come to life; meaty aromas followed by chewy tannins coupled with flavors of roast meat and beef jerky…

Racy acidity and the resulting mouthwatering helped tame those tannins and released savory black olive and spicy pepper flavors on the finish.

Only 13.5% abv, this VinBodrum Shiraz punched above its body weight in flavor and left a lasting impression. For me a good one.

Sadly, Bodrum Winery produces only a very small amount of wine every year. And while finding their wines in stores (at least in Istanbul) is next to impossible; they manage to sell out nonetheless. Which means even if I flew back to Bodrum they wouldn’t have any more of this vintage for me!
