Doluca Signium White Blend 2017
For some years now, Doluca has been making a red blend called Signium. The blend changes from year to year but it has always been red. Until now. Last year the winery released its first white Doluca Signium.
As one of Turkey’s largest wineries, I often look upon Doluca a bit distrustfully. The winery is responsible for putting some of Turkey’s worst wines on the market. However, it was also one of the first to recognize the need for quality wine. In the late 80s it launched its Sarafin line. Together with wineries like Umurbey slowly began to change the face of Turkish wine.
Now it offers wines at every price level. While its upper tier wines often price themselves out of most people’s price range; there are some nice wines to be found in Doluca’s quality tiers if you want to pay for them. Part of Doluca’s top tier quality category, Signium can be a little pricey for many but I was pleasantly surprised by how expensive this wine wasn’t.
Doluca Signium White Blend 2017 Tasting Notes
The white Signium blends together three grapes: Chardonnay, Viognier, and Narince bottled after seven months aging in French oak. On the pour the wine was a lovely lemon color and released beautiful aromatics. A swirl unleashed floral and tropical aromas of banana, luscious stone fruit, violet, plumeria, and nutmeg.
Silky and medium-bodied with bright, mouthwatering acid and 13.5% abv. Well-integrated oak really added to the roundness in the mouth and brought out some spicy flavors but did not overwhelm or take the main stage. Beautiful flavors of melon, stone fruit, lemon curd, citrus zest, and flowers carried through to a medium long, exotically floral finish.
